The Power of Prior Learning Assessment: Insights from 88 Years of Research

Have you ever thought about how much knowledge and experience you’ve gained outside the classroom? What if you could turn that into college credit and fast-track your degree? That’s where Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) comes in—a game-changer for adult learners.

My latest study dives deep into PLA research, spanning nearly nine decades, from 1935 to 2023. I uncovered some fascinating trends and insights that highlight just how impactful PLA can be. Let’s break it down.

A Rising Star in Education

PLA has come a long way. Between 2000 and 2023, research activity exploded, with 87% of all studies published during this period. Why? Because educators and policymakers are realizing PLA’s potential to help students graduate faster and more affordably.

Studies show that PLA isn’t just a time-saver—it’s a motivator. Adult learners who earn credit through PLA often graduate at higher rates than their peers. It’s especially powerful for underrepresented groups, creating opportunities for success and equity.

The Movers and Shakers of PLA Research

Certain individuals and institutions have paved the way in PLA research. One standout is R. Klein-Collins, whose work has significantly shaped the field. She’s not just the most cited author but also one of the most prolific, with research that’s inspired countless others.

Leading the charge in publishing is Taylor & Francis, responsible for 21% of all PLA studies. Their journals have become go-to resources for educators, administrators, and policymakers.

Collaboration: A Key to Success

One of the most exciting findings from my research is the collaborative spirit in the PLA community. Over 40% of studies were co-authored, reflecting a global network of scholars working together to advance this field. Collaboration isn’t just about teamwork; it’s about sharing diverse perspectives to solve complex challenges.

PLA Across the Globe

While PLA research is thriving worldwide, the United States is leading the pack, contributing 72% of all studies. This focus on adult education aligns with the U.S.’s emphasis on lifelong learning and workforce development.

Why This Matters

PLA isn’t just an academic concept—it’s a practical tool for empowering learners. It’s about recognizing that knowledge comes from life, not just textbooks. Whether you’re a student, educator, or policymaker, understanding the value of PLA can transform how we approach education.

What’s Next?

There’s still work to be done. My research highlights the need for more accessible PLA opportunities, especially at the associate degree level. Future studies could explore its economic impact on graduates or ways to expand its reach to underserved communities.

At the end of the day, PLA is more than a policy—it’s a promise to learners everywhere that their experiences matter. And that’s a promise worth keeping.
